Public Safety & Crime Issues in Columbus

Crime has been a concern for hotels throughout Columbus and surrounding communities for some time, and OHLA has continued to reach out to public officials and others with specific concerns, questions and suggestions. Recently, criminal activity in the airport area has exploded, and hotel businesses and their guests are adversely affected more than ever before.

News reports, guest complaints and reviews, and group cancellations will negatively impact the entire travel economy.

It will take a combined effort by all hotels and other partners to push for the necessary steps in the short term and long term. Be part of that discussion as we report on conversations to date and strategize next steps.

Legislative and public policy focus

Key current issues hotels should be aware of include:

- New federal rules which would make associates joint employees of franchisors and franchisees. Scheduled to take effect later this month, this unworkable arrangement could transform how franchise businesses operate

- New ballot issue which would raise Ohio’s minimum wage again, and also eliminate the tipped wage. Learn how that could impact your operation and why tipped employees oppose the idea

- Protecting how lodging tax dollars are used: learn how OHLA helped push back the latest proposal to change the lodging tax law and use hotel tax dollars for jails

- Directing community investment funds to the travel economy: three major pieces of legislation in 2024 will direct state dollars to different projects and initiatives

Additional topics to be covered at this regional lodging council meeting include:
